To Race or not to Race?

With the weather being in the positive digits, I have been able to run outside a few times since my last post. I was off yesterday for the Martin Luther King Holiday, so I was able to head out for a morning weekday run, which is never possible with work.

My official training plan starts next week, and I am a little nervous. The first few weeks are actually less running than I am doing now, but I keep peeking ahead in the schedule and see that 20 miler. I know I need to take one step at a time, but 20 miles is a long run.

I have a dilemma and need advice. There are a few upcoming races that I normally like to participate in such as the Shamrock Shuffle 8k and our local Lake in the Hills, Run thru the Hills 5k or 10k. The problem I have is they are both on days for training that indicate cross train and after runs of 13 and 16 miles. Should I run these for fun or skip all together and cross train? The Run thru the Hills is a race in my town and my son wants to participate in the 5k. He ran the 5k last year and I did the 10k and I have a few other buddies running in as well. I’m just not sure what to do.

I did my part yesterday to spur the economy. We purchased new appliances for the kitchen. We have been talking about this for a year or so and finally decided to do it. We are upgrading to all stainless steel from our current white. The current fridge will move to the garage and the rest we will donate to charity. They are in working order we are just looking for a more updated look.

I know I was going to post some photos of my garage I finished but have not. Here a re a few. Oh well, better late than never. This is a continual work in progress, as long as my wife doesn't kill me.

Happy running!

I wish I had advice for you on your running dilemma but I don't feel qualified enough to give it....so I have nothing:) Have a great day Tony!

  2. I'd run the races as training runs. Just don't go out expecting PR's - have fun, it's always nice to change some runs up.

  4. Your garage looks so nice!

Run your races - running with your kid and with friends is special and you don't want to miss that. You can pick one to really "race" and get a feel for where you speed/fitness is at and do others for fun.

  5. I say run your races for fun, if you can control yourself (I can't).
And when will you be over to clean my garage? I think yours is cleaner than my kitchen!

  7. You can always flip flop a cross-training day. Got some shelves for my garage *sigh* That is it's own endurance event. Thanks for the inspiration.

  8. I'd say RUN. See what ya got in the tank and just have a blast. Sooo much better than cross training! And wow, I am with the rest of the masses when I say you have one clean garage! Mine looks like a bomb went off in it!

  9. Run! The races are fun and that is why you run...to have fun. I have done surprisingly well racing after long runs but go in with an open mind that I may be tired and I'm not looking for a PR. I have even added extra warm up miles for a race to be able to meet the schedule for that day. I have tried to do extra miles after a race too but I get lazy and don't do those.

  10. Thanks for all the advice. I am going to run and just have fun with it.

I am having garage cleaning classes starting next month for any one interested. I try not to keep a lot of things I don't use or need.

  11. Glad you decided to run. I use races as training runs often. I think it helps with discipline like “don’t do faster than the plan is”.

  12. Hi Tony,
I will be sure to sign my husband up for your "how to keep your garage clean" classes, because clearly he needs them! Just for fun sometime I will post a picture of our garage:) No......on second thought, maybe not because it is just to way embarrassing:) Have a good weekend Tony!

  13. Perfect garage to create a home workout space. Its always funny that rooms that are labeled certain things end up going the other way.
